Alani Children's Center

Alani Children's Center provides early childhood care and education for children of the campus community and also serves as a laboratory for the early childhood teacher training programs, service learning, and related programs in the University of Hawaii. The Center serves children two to five years old.

The Center is located on 18th Avenue, north of the Hawaii Film Studio, besides parking lot D on the KCC campus.

Licensing & Accreditation

The Center is licensed by the state Department of Human Services. Our program is also accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs, the credentialing body of the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

Accreditation means that our program is of high quality and meets national standards of excellence in program practices, teacher qualifications, and child health and safety. Hours and Days of Operation

The Center is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., August to May in conjunction with the fall and spring academic calendar. The Center is closed on all non-instructional days including state holidays and winter, spring, and summer breaks.

Programs are for 2, 3, and 5 days a week, depending on age and availability. No partial day enrollment is available.

Enrollment Information

KCC students, faculty, and staff may enroll their children at the Center. Priority is given to children whose parents or guardians are KCC students or employees. Priority consideration are given to:

  • Continuing students
  • Students who are single parents;
  • Students enrolled in 9 or more credits; then
  • Full-time employees.

Any remaining spaces are allocated to children of other UH system students and employees, and then to the general community. Spaces are allocated based upon priority and number of openings available in each age group and gender.

Children from all ethnic, racial, religious, and national backgrounds are welcome. Children with disabilities whose needs can be met by the Center are also welcome.

After these dates, applications will be considered on a space available basis.

For fall enrollment, parents are notified late May or beginning June.
For spring enrollment, parents are notified mid to late December.

Children who are not selected due to lack of openings will be placed on a wait list. All families will be notified of their status within a reasonable length of time.

Tuition Rates

A nonrefundable annual comprehensive fee of $100 for full time enrollment is due upon receipt of the acceptance letter. The fee confirms your child's space at the Center and covers classroom supplies and equipment, excursions, and supplies for family events. The fee is prorated for part time enrollment.

Tuition is due on a semester basis and can be paid in full or in four equal installments. Families sign a payment agreement each semester which specifies the amount of tuition and payment schedule. Families are obligated to pay the full amount as shown in the payment agreement whether or not the child attends every day. Tuition includes breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack.

Weekly Menus

Tuition includes breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack. Our weekly menu is posted on the front door bulletin board.

  • Breakfast (two breakfast meals per week are hot and others are cold):
    • Example 1 (hot): French toast or pancakes and milk
    • Example 2 (cold): Cereal or fruit (fresh or canned) and milk
  • Lunch hot:
    • Example 1: Beef stew with vegetables, rice, fruit, bread, and milk
    • Example 2: Kalua pig with cabbage, rice, fruit, bread, and milk
  • Snack

Please discuss any dietary restrictions or allergies with your child's teacher. All food is prepared and served in accordance with guideline for the USDA childcare food program and menu choices reflect divergent cultural and ethnic eating preferences. If your child is on a special diet, you can provide home lunch. There is no tuition adjustment for home lunch.

Daily Schedule

Each class has their own routine but morning normally includes indoor and outdoor time, breakfast and lunch, and story time. There is nap or quiet time and indoor and outdoor time in the afternoon.
