Occupational Therapy Assistant Program Curriculum
Our small class size (16 students) and faculty student ratio of 1:8 allows for a student centered learning environment. Courses will include large and small group activities and utilize experts from the community to foster critical thinking. Students will participate in laboratory courses that emphasize a hands-on approach to skill development and engage students in the teaching-learning process needed for therapy. Specialized training includes activities of daily living, fabrication of splints, adapting home and work environments, and therapeutic use of crafts and games. Fieldwork I and II provide opportunities to work with therapists in various practice settings to gain clinical competence. Students can develop leadership skills through involvement in professional organizations including the OTA Club on campus, Occupational Therapy Association of Hawaii (OTAH) and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). Students can be admitted in the fall semester and complete the 70-72 credit OTA program in 6 semesters including summers. Fieldwork II must be completed within 18 months of all other academic coursework.
A Certificate of Competence in Activity Aide will be awarded to any student completing 2 open enrollment courses (5 credits), OTA 119 – Therapeutic Activities and HLTH 118 – Therapeutic Interpersonal Skills.
