The Assessment Technologies Institute-Test of Essential Academic Skills (ATI-TEAS) exam is an admissions requirement for the Practical Nursing (PRCN) Program, LPN-RN Transition (TRANS) Program and the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Program. Effective August 31, 2016, the Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) will replace the “TEAS Version 5.0 Exam” with the “ATI TEAS Exam” whereupon the study guide titled “Study Manual for the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Version V” (ISBN 1933107987) will also be replaced by the “ATI TEAS Study Manual – Sixth Edition” (ISBN-13: 9781565335646). The study guide may be purchased at the KCC Bookstore, via the ATI website or other private book vendors. The Nursing Department at Kapi‘olani Community College will accept the exam results for both the “TEAS Version 5.0” exam and the “ATI TEAS” exam within the three-year expiration period.
The KCC Practical Nursing (PRCN) Program requires an ATI-TEAS exam adjusted individual total score of 65% or higher. The KCC LPN-RN Transition Program and the KCC Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Program require an ATI-TEAS exam adjusted individual total score of 78% or higher. Results are affirmed immediately after completing the computer-based test. The exam score remains current for three years. The exam may be retaken every 3 months. The higher score will be used if taken more than once. Effective Spring 2014, the Nursing Department will be implementing a pilot study, wherein 60% or higher will be considered for the PRCN Program, while 65% or higher will be considered for the ADN and TRANS programs. With a target effective date of June 2017, nursing program applicants will be required to achieve a score at the proficient level (or higher) for the individual adjusted total score (or scaled score) as well as the four individual content areas (in English, reading, math and science). For updates on the disposition of the ATI TEAS exam results, pre-nursing students are encouraged to periodically revisit the ATI TEAS Exam webpage (on the KCC website), attend a nursing information session or visit with a nursing program counselor during walk-in advising periods.
ATI TEAS Exam Scoring Update: The Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) has postponed its plans to change the scoring system for the TEAS exam, wherein the adjusted individual total score (as a percentage) will continue to be used as part of the exam results. The ATI TEAS exam “scaled score” (with three digits) was to have been implemented in August 2016 but its implementation has been postponed until a later date.
Test Dates, Times and Location:
The ATI TEAS exam administered at Kapi‘olani Community College will be offered only on a walk-in basis, whereupon exam participants may visit the KCC Testing Center in the Lama Library during the walk-in ATI-TEAS exam periods to complete the exam. See Walk-In TEAS flyer (PDF) for details.
