Nursing: Transition for Licensed Practical Nurses – Special Announcements

Pilot Study for ATI-TEAS Pre-Admissions Exam for Nursing Program: Effective for the LPN-RN Transition Program in the Fall 2013 and thereafter, and as part of a pilot study to analyze the Assessment Technology Institute’s Test of Essential Academic Skills (ATI-TEAS) exam and determine if the minimum adjusted individual total score should be revised, the Nursing Department at Kapi‘olani Community College (KCC) will accept an ATI-TEAS adjusted individual total score of 65% or higher to fulfill the pre-admissions exam requirement for the KCC LPN-RN Transition Program. Applicants for the KCC LPN-RN Transition Program must continue to fulfill all other admissions requirements and will be considered for admissions on a “best qualified” bases.

Pilot Study for NURS 212 Course as a Prerequisite Course for LPN-RN Transition Program: Effective for the LPN-RN Transition Program in the Spring 2014 and thereafter, and as part of a pilot study to establish a three-semester LPN-RN Transition Program, the Nursing Department at Kapi‘olani Community College (KCC) will offer the NURS 212 (Pathophysiology) course as a prerequisite course for the LPN-RN Transition Program. Interested students must complete all of the prerequisite courses for the LPN-RN Transition Program and possess a current practice nursing license in the state of Hawai’i in order to enroll in the NURS 212 course. Applicants for the KCC LPN-RN Transition Program must continue to fulfill all other admissions requirements and will be considered for admissions on a “best qualified” basis.

As the NURS 212 course is offered as a prerequisite course for the LPN-RN Transition Program, the Nursing Department will begin to phase out the four-semester Transition Program and begin to phase in the three-semester Transition Program. Students able to complete the NURS 212 course as a prerequisite may apply and be considered for admission into the three-semester Transition Program; while students who are not able to complete the NURS 212 course as a prerequisite course may apply and be considered for admission into the four-semester Transition Program (in Fall 2014 and Spring 2015). The Nursing Department anticipates phasing out the four-semester Transition Program in Fall 2015.

Interested students are encouraged to submit an application during the application period of December 1 to February 1 (for Fall entry) or June 1 to September 1 (for Spring entry), whereupon the Nursing Department will confirm the student’s eligibility, admission status and point of entry into either the three-semester or four-semester Transition Program.
