The Value Of Service-Learning Courses
By: Francisco Acoba, Assistant Professor, Department of Languages, Linguistics and Literature
Did you know that more than 400 students each semester participate in service-learning? As part of the coursework, these students do community service, such as tutoring children (second language teaching courses), extracting invasive species (Botany 101 and Biology 124), and caring for elders (Family Resources 230). In serving the community, students learn the course content more deeply — and prepare for their major and even career!
Students can also do service-learning in the college’s 27 Sustainability-Designated (“S-Designated”) courses that focus on issues of island sustainability. Check Class Availability for S-Designated courses.
