As approximately 22,000 runners awoke in the wee hours to compete in the 43rd Honolulu Marathon on Sunday, December 13, Kapi‘olani Community College’s Team Hawai‘i awoke and prepared for a different kind of competition.
Student culinary teams throughout the state competed in the American Culinary Federation’s State Culinary Competition which was held at Schofield Barracks. Kapi‘olani CC’s Team Hawai`i got off to an impressive start by earning a perfect score on their appetizer. This led to more success as the Team scored an overall 92.66 points out of a possible 100 which earned them the Gold medal. The students did a stellar performance in and out of the kitchen, representing Kapi‘olani CC and the UH System with pride. Chef Alan Tsuchiyama, one of the Team’s coaches said, “The tasting judges loved every course and complimented the composition, flavors and seasoning of the meal.”
The next stop for the culinary team is Reno, Nevada in early February where they will compete in the Western Regional Culinary Salon. The winning teams from the four ACF Regional sites will vie for the coveted Gold at the National competition.
Besides Chef Tsuchiyama, Chef Jason Peel is also serving as Team coach.
