Employment Prep Center

The Kapi‘olani Community College Employment Prep Center will educate students in their lifelong career development to lead fulfilling lives that sustain themselves, their communities, Hawai‘i, and the world.

Mission Statement

The Kapi‘olani Community College Employment Prep Center supports students to identify and communicate their skills, interests, personality, and values that align with their personal, academic, and career goals. We provide resources and events to help students make informed academic and career decisions. We collaborate with faculty, staff, and our community partners to connect our diverse students and graduates with opportunities.

Established on the Kapi‘olani Community College (Kapi’olani CC) campus in 2015, the Employment Prep Center (EPC) provides career services and job preparation to Kapi’olani CC students and alumni.

Visit the links below to learn more about the services we provide to employers, faculty, staff, and students.  Career Assessments can be found at “Explore Careers.”  Links to related job sites are in “Achieve in Your Job Search,” and other opportunities to build your skills can be found at “Learn from Experience.”  Resume templates and tips can be found under “Prepare to Get Hired.”

We encourage employers and students to create a profile on the UHCC Job Center Online (JCO) for access to job postings, career events, and resources.  Current students may schedule an appointment with an advisor in the Employment Prep Center using MySuccess from the MyUH Portal. (View instructions to make an appointment on MySuccess.)

For Employers
  • Job Postings:  All employers can access the UHCC Job Center Online (JCO) to post current job openings across the UHCC campus system, and search student resumes.  Use the JCO to manage your application process, or refer job seekers to your own email or website in the JCO posting. For more information, please see our Job Posting Guide.
  • Flyers:  Bulletin boards on campus are reserved for student activities only.  The Employment Prep Center encourages you to use the UHCC Job Center Online (JCO) to post opportunities virtually.  You may request that share your flyer with appropriate departments by sending it to us at gethired@hawaii.edu.  We may also repost these opportunities for employers on social media.
  • On-Campus Recruitment:  Representatives from organizations approved in the UHCC Job Center Online are welcome to share information when classes are in session.  Proof of liability insurance is required. Please contact the Employment Prep Center to schedule an on-campus recruitment table at (808) 734-9066 or gethired@hawaii.edu.
  • Job Fairs:  The Employment Prep Center will not host a large career fair at Kapi‘olani Community College in the Spring 2018 semester.  All invitations to career events are managed through the UHCC Job Center Online (JCO).  Please update your contact information in order to receive targeted event invitations.
Explore Careers

The Maida Kamber Center (MKC) offers two resources to help you explore your values, interests, and strengths in order to connect to a career.  We recommend starting with the Focus 2 Career assessment. Register for your own personal account using the password from the MKC site.

How Much Will I Earn?:  Use this free resource to find the best careers connected to majors offered at Kapi‘olani Community College, starting with your desired lifestyle, educational attainment, skills, and interests.  The site is constantly developing, so visit often.

Sokanu (pronounced “so can you”) is a comprehensive career exploration site that matches you to a database of over 800 careers. Just enter your hawaii.edu email address and select your major to begin.

The Hawai‘i Industry Sectors site was developed by the University of Hawai‘i system.  Click on “Explore” to see visual representations of real-time data related to jobs and career pathways in the state of Hawai‘i.

Engage with Future Employers
  • Informational Interviews:  Spend time with someone who is in the career you are working towards. Come in and talk with the Employment Prep Center about how to request an informational interview.  Appointments are available through MySuccess at MyUH. (View instructions on how to make an appointment.)
  • Internships:  Employers post these learning opportunities on the Job Center Online (JCO).  Programs across the campus, such as the STEM Program, the Native Hawaiian Student Affairs (NHSA) Programs and the Honda International Center also maintain resources to help students succeed.
  • Volunteer Opportunities: Get connected with the Aloha United Way and find volunteer opportunities by clicking on the “volunteer” button and using the drop-down menu under “search by” to filter the results. Use “phrase” to search by keywords. Hawai‘i-based, conservation-oriented volunteer opportunities can also be found at Conservation Connections.
Learn from Experience
  • Campus Contributions:  Make a difference on your campus while promoting student success.  Join a registered independent organization or help in the planning of campus-wide events through student activities.
  • Research:  Undergraduate research provides you with an opportunity to build your CV while connecting with faculty in the field.  Visit your program director to discuss independent study or the STEM Program for opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math.
  • Student Work:  An excellent place to gain skills is through an on-campus job.  Students that are enrolled half-time and in good academic standing are eligible to work on any UH campus.
  • Learn through Service:  The Kapi‘olani Service & Sustainability Learning Program offers hands-on experience for students in the neighboring community.  On campus, the Māla Māunuunu provides a variety of opportunities through ‘aina-based learning.
  • Study Abroad:  Expand your worldview through Study Abroad and develop academically and personally through immersion in a foreign culture.
Prepare to Get Hired
