Kapi‘olani Community College partnered with the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa National Resource Centers to apply for grants from the U.S. Department of Education Title VI International Foreign Language & Education program to secure funds to launch its community interpreter program. UH Mānoa was awarded seven Tile VI IFLE grants totaling over $7 million over a four-year grant cycle to boost international studies in the Asia-Pacific. The awards include:

  • National Resource Center for East Asia, led by Director Mark A. Levin 
  • National Resource Center for Southeast Asia, led by Dr. Miriam Stark
  • National Resource Center for the Pacific Islands, led by Dr. Alex Mawyer
  • Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowships for East Asia
  • Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowships for Southeast Asia
  • Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowships for the Pacific Islands

The National Resource Centers grants will support modern language instruction, teacher training, curriculum development, outreach, and library collections. Kapi‘olani partnered with the NRCs for East Asia and Southeast Asia to propose its community interpreter program, which will enhance access to important medical and legal information for Hawaii’s underserved communities.
