Aloha Kākou,
KĪPAIPAI ALOHA invites you to join us for a kamaʻilio [talkstory] and hands-on experience on traditional Hawaiian KAULA [rope, string, cordage] and the plants that have provided their invaluable fibers for our KUPUNA [ancestors] for centuries and for nimble-fingered artisans of modern times
Do you know of any of the plants used traditionally for KAULA in Hawaiʻi?
Have you tried to process and braid with natural fibers?
“Cordage and ropes of all sorts (na kaula), were articles of great value, serviceable in all sorts of work. Of kaula there were many kinds.”
Hawaiian Antiquities, David Malo, 1951: 78
Together, we will learn about cordage plants ~ how to identify, process, and create KAULA with them
