Another $1 million in federal funding is on the way!

Kapi‘olani Community College submitted its application for the second installment of funding from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund. Congratulations to Vice Chancellor Furuto for taking the initiative to be prepared for the second wave of CARES Act funding. Thanks to VCAS Furuto, the campus was able to apply within hours of USDOE’s announcement today.

The federal aid under the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund will be provided in two waves. The first wave will provide more roughly $1 million for emergency assistance to students. Further details on the criteria for distributing this financial assistance is forthcoming from Student Affairs. The second wave of funding will cover operational costs for expenses resulting from response to the coronavirus.

We’ve established a page for the Higher Education Emergency Relief fund to track emergency federal assistance provided as part of the $14 billion package to higher education institutions (includes a list of all universities, colleges, and vocational schools eligible for federal funding)

The Shared Services Center will be hosting a webinar on federal funding available to institutions of higher education to provide emergency financial assistance to students, support the transition to distance learning, and fund programs addressing issues related to the coronavirus. We will answer the following questions:

1) What is the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund under the CARES Act?
2) What are the federal regulations for the first wave of funding providing emergency assistance to students?
3) What are the federal regulations for the second wave of funding for institutional expenses resulting from responding to the coronavirus?
